“Pay attention to me.

“Nothing else.

“Focus on my voice, and blur the whole world out.

“If you can allow your mind to accommodate me, and only me, you may just make it out of this alive. Gods willing, I hope you do, we can’t lose another soldier.

“Get your weapon, it’s the blaster hanging there by the door, don’t worry it’s deadlocked. Nothing is getting in or out of this bunker, nothing can.

“Your memory is going to be a bit shoddy, it’s always like that. I’m Aa’sim, the Last Praetor. And you, my friend are…well, you know your name already, I don’t mean to patronise. But what you are now, on the other hand, is a different matter.

“Careful, we’re walking into the next room, you need to get your armour ready. Fix it from bottom up, the gravolinks should hold through. Don’t worry if it doesn’t fit at first, just give it a moment, the computer’ll calculate your biometrics and morph the suit to accommodate you. Careful with the latches, you’re a lot stronger than you were. Faster too. The glare from the lights on top will hurt for a bit, all your senses have been heightened. Queen’s orders for all her soldiers.

“Look, we’re the last guard, the last defence at the wall. And this outpost is the only one standing. If the Necrons get through, all of Old Lagos will be lost and all of humanity will perish. We have to stand tall, and strong.

“Did you hear that?

“It’s getting louder, come on!

“Okay, remember how I told you that nothing can get in or out of this bunker? Well, I was right. But the Necrons…they don’t exist, not in the real sense of it. They come from the inbetween of time and space.

“Okay, cock your blaster, and aim. Just think shoot and it’ll shoot.

“And, kid? I’m not sure what you’re thinking but I’ll let you know this: if you think this is gonna have a happy ending, then you weren’t paying enough attention.

“This isn’t the first time you’re going to die.

“And this isn’t my first rodeo.

“ So, show ’em hell.”
